LOTR:TTT bootleg

This has got to be the funniest /. post ever! :) Engrish LOTR. Supposedly, these are real screen captures from bootleg LOTR:TTT DVD in Asia. Here’s a sample:

[UPDATE: Oh sucks, this site was taken offline due to legal reasons]

And my favorite comment from the post:

My favorite bad sub-title comes from a low budget Hong Kong Kungfu flick:

As always, the young hero has just had his ass kick by the bad guy that just killed his family. The hero is back at the wise teacher’s home and he wants to go straight back out (before getting the usual 1/2 movie training period required to thump the bad guy), but the teacher gives him a 3 minute speech. There are NO subtitles during this speech, none for 3 minutes. Then at the end a single word: NO!

While we’re on the subject, engrish.com is pretty funny too.

Catch-22

So what really IS “Catch-22″? It comes from the novel of the same name by Joseph Heller:

Yossarian looked at him soberly and tried another approach. “Is Orr crazy?”
“He sure is,” Doc Daneeka said.

“Can you ground him?”

“I sure can. But first he has to ask me to. That’s part of the rule.”

“Then why doesn’t he ask you to?”

“Because he’s crazy,” Doc Daneeka said. “He has to be crazy to keep flying combat missions after all the close calls he’s had. Sure, I can ground Orr. But first he has to ask me to.”

“That’s all he has to do to be grounded?”

“That’s all. Let him ask me.”

“And then you can ground him?” Yossarian asked.

“No. Then I can’t ground him.”

“You mean there’s a catch?”

“Sure there’s a catch,” Doc Daneeka replied. “Catch-22. Anyone who wants to get out of combat duty isn’t really crazy.”

There was only one catch and that was Catch-22, which specified that a concern for one’s own safety in the face of dangers that were real and immediate was the process of a rational mind. Orr was crazy and could be grounded. All he had to do was ask; and as soon as he did, he would no longer be crazy and would have to fly more missions. Orr would be crazy to fly more missions and sane if he didn’t, but if he was sane he had to fly them. If he flew them he was crazy and didn’t have to; but if he didn’t want to he was sane and had to. Yossarian was moved very deeply by the absolute simplicity of this clause of Catch-22 and let out a respectful whistle.

“That’s some catch, that Catch-22,” he observed.

“It’s the best there is,” Doc Daneeka agreed.

So now you know where the phrase comes from ;)

Tetris

LONG but very interesting article about Tetris playing AI robot. First half of the article presents a VERY comprehensive collection of history, rules, algorithm, etc… then goes into building Tetris playing robot with easily available computer parts. He also has a good implementation of standard Tetris game you can download.

Update: Acutally, this guy’s (Colin Fahey) website is quite interesting. I found a reference to the following simple piece of code, that will crash (will require hard reboot) windows — I did not verify this (I don’t want to verify this on my machine ;)

#include <stdio.h>
int main(void)
{
for (;;)
{
printf("Hung up\t\b\b\b\b\b\b");
}
return 0;
}

  • Are Hummer Owners Idiots?

    “Are Hummer Owners Idiots?” Are SUVs more dangerous than passenger cars? I think so. I know this from a very personal experience… Automobile manufacturers seem to have this flawed belief that bigger is always better and safer. Not only driving SUV more dangerous, it’s more wasteful. It’s an epitome of America suffering from affluanza
