Quiz Show

Starting John Tuturo (Knish in Rounders), Ralph Fiennes (The English Patient), and Rob Morrow (Northern Exposure), and many other accomplished supporting actors, and directed by Robert Redford, Quiz Show is a movie based on a true story about a rigged quiz show, greedy contestants, corrupt TV executives, and untiring Congressional Subcomittee of Legislative Oversight investigator who is deteremined to uncover the truth. Aside from the great script, the directing and the actings are top-notch… really took me by surprise. And I really love these movies that are based on a true story, that tells you what happened to the people at the end of the movie, sort of like “Where are they now?” :)

After watching this movie, it makes me question the authenticity and integrity of the television — not just the modern day quiz shows like Jeopardy, but also news programs. “Don’t believe everything you see on TV” is really the lesson to be learned.

Dirty Pretty Things

Dirty Pretty Things, starting Audrey Tatou (Amelie), is a very grim mystery/drama that involves murders and harsh lives of illegal aliens in slums of London. It’s has good plot, though slow at times it never fails to keep you engaged. Chjwetel Ejiofor, who plays Nigerian immigrant opposite Audrey Tatou, is also great.

DON’T EVER DIAL AREA CODE 809, 284 AND 876

Here’s an email from AT&T (at least the scam seems to be real)
(Thanks to Kevin)

THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT INFORMATION PROVIDED TO US BY AT&T. DON’T EVER DIAL AREA CODE 809
This one is being distributed all over the US. This is pretty scary, especially given the way they try to get you to call. Be sure you read this and pass it on to all your friends and family so they don’t get scammed!

MAJOR SCAM:
Don’t respond to Emails, phone calls, or web pages which tell you to call an “809″ area Phone Number. This is a very important issue of Scam Busters because it alerts you to a scam that is spreading *extremely* quickly, can easily cost you $2400 or more, and is difficult to avoid unless you are aware of it.

We’d like to thank Verizon for bringing this scam to our attention. This scam has also been identified by the National Fraud Information Center and is costing victims a lots of money.

There are lots of different permutations of this scam.

Offsprings of the oldest tree on Earth

Scientists have successfully cloned the 4,768-year old bristlecone pine tree named Methuselah (Prometheus was older at 4,950-years old, but some college students cut it down accidentally), and planted them in US Botanical Garden in Washington D.C. I wonder how long Washington D.C. will be around though…

Why Gigli bombed in the box office

From independent.co.uk

… the executives are not blaming such bombs as The Hulk, Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle or Gigli on poor quality, lack of originality, or general failure to entertain. There’s absolutely nothing new about that.

The problem, they say, is teenagers who instant message their friends with their verdict on new films - sometimes while they are still in the cinema watching - and so scuppering carefully crafted marketing campaigns designed to lure audiences out to a big movie on its opening weekend.

I can’t roll my eyes hard enough…

Google Calculator

Google just gets better and better! Google Calculator not only solves simple arithematic expressions (such as 0+0 you can also type in ‘0 plus 0‘ or ‘zero plus zero‘), but also does unit conversions (such as tea spoons in cubic kilometer, and (this I was really impressed) answer to life the universe and everything.

Try this…

The human brain truly is a mystery - try this:

While sitting at your desk make clockwise circles with your right foot. While doing this, draw the number “6″ in the air with your right hand. What direction is your foot going now?

(Thanks to Lorraine)

Okay, this “worked” for me in the first try, but I was able to concentrate to make my right foot continue to make clockwise circles after a few tries.

Mars watch this month

Don’t miss this once in a life time opportunity. Through out the month of August, Mars will be closest it has been to Earth in 60,000 years — only 34.6 million miles away (pretty close considering it was 5 times that distance in February). It will be so close that it easily visible to naked eyes (see this picture taken with a digital camera) Read more about it here, and check schedules for Mars watch events in the West Coast US here.
