One of the caller on Forum this morning commented that Terry Schiavo was basically dead because her frontal cortex “where her consciousness resides” had all been liquidfied… and so “she does not have a soul”. I think that raises a bigger question about how one define life and death… and also everlong philosophical debate on where a person’s soul is, whether a soul is separate entity, or whether a person even has a soul. According to a fascinating book Stiff by Mary Roach, Babylonians thought that the liver is the source of human emotion and spirit (as it was the largest and the most slick-looking organ in human body). It was the Egyptians who first thought that the soul resides in the brain… But how do we know that for sure? Some say that we feel the soul is in the brain because it is close to important sensory organs - eyes, ears, mouth. And even if soul is located in the brain, how much brain is a “soulful” brain? Is Schiavo’s brain a soulful brain? Determining whether a person is dead or alive is just as difficult, and leads to more serious consequences (for the living anyways). Most people look for a beating heart to make sure if a person is alive. But in some conditions, a person’s heart could not be beating for minutes while they are fully conscious!

Wired 13.04: Rise of the Green Machine
Wired magazine takes a look at the past, present, and the future of hybrids and other “green” machines. Meanwhile, Lexus RX400h will launch next month. No mention of how much gas-mileage it will get or how much it will cost, however. As I always say, my next car will be a hybrid! ^^

AU-Columbia University Eye On Japan Lecture Series
Dr. Nakamats (pictured left) holds record number (3200) of patents, including floppy disc. One of his invention is “Love Jet” which guarantees more sexual stimulation than regular sex or sex with Viagra - and without foreplay “which is very important!” According to Dr. Nakamats, he regularly holds his breath under water to come up with invention ideas because “oxygen is bad for your brain”.. and “if you [have] sex before 24, your brain is broken.. [if your normal brain is a boiled egg] your brain becomes scrambled egg if you have sex at 18″. More revelations by Dr. Nak: “Coffee is BAD for brain” and tea is “3 times as bad as coffee!” Oh, water is bad for brain also. ROTFLOL! :D
