Anime Eye

Wired 13.05: PLAY

The latest trend for Japanese schoolgirls is colored contacts - not green or blue ones that ape gaijin eyes, but inky black lenses that make them look like they have gigantic monochromatic pupils.

Why not go all the way and make their eyes as big as fists?? LOL

Yahoo! My Web

I wrote about “Y! MySearch” last October and also predicted that Google would come up with similar feature. Well, today Yahoo launched Y! MyWeb which seems like a rebrand of MySearch with few improvements - e.g. saving directly from Y! search result, and web page caching that works. Pretty cool~

A small button for Firefox (instead of full-blown toolbar) for MyWeb would be nice..

UPDATE: There’s a bookmarklet available. Not as good as dedicated button, but it should do :)

The Kiss

Yahoo! News - Doisneau Photo ‘The Kiss’ Sells for $202K

The woman in Robert Doisneau’s classic photograph of a couple stealing a passionate kiss on a Paris street sold her original print at an auction Monday for more than $200,000 — about 10 times the expected sale price.

Kenny, you should’ve taken out a loan on your condo and buy this! :D

Irrational Exuberance

NPR : Real Estate and ‘Irrational Exuberance’
” Robert Shiller, professor of economics at Yale University. The new edition of his book, Irrational Exuberance, adds real estate to his analysis of the stock market”

Significant further rises in [stock and housing] markets could lead, eventually, to even more significant declines. The bad outcome could be that eventual declines would result in a substantial increase in the rate of personal bankruptcies, which could lead to a secondary string of bankruptcies of financial institutions as well. Another long-run consequence could be a decline in consumer and business confidence, and another, possibly worldwide, recession. This extreme outcome — like the situation in Japan since 1990 writ large — is not inevitable, but it is a much more serious risk than is widely acknowledged.

Well, nothing we haven’t heard before. The question isn’t IF, but WHEN.

Enron, The Movie

I saw a preview of Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room at the Kung Fu Hustle screening over the weekend, and it looked really good. I just LOVE these documentaries :)

PS: Kung Fu Hustle is HILARIOUS! (9/10)

Gas tank positions

Why is the gas tank on the right in some cars and the left on others?

Stumbled on this on my.yahoo.com page. Another theory I heard was that gas tanks are on left (driver’s) side so the driver won’t have to walk around the car to re-fuel. *shrugs*

Star Wars: Revelation

All Star Wars Geeks rejoice, Revelation is here! :D

“Revelations” is a non-profit Star Wars fan film that was shot within the Northern Virginia, Maryland and Washington DC Metro Area. “Revelations” is made possible through a combined effort of artists, fans and the local film industry. Everyone who has worked on “Revelations” is a volunteer. No one is paid to make this film. Panic Struck Productions set out to produce their first independent film with a very small budget and the result is “Revelations”

You can download the movie directly from the site. It’s 40 minutes long, and from what I’ve watched so far I’m VERY impressed, especially the CG animation which I think is on-par with real Star Wars movies (but so is bad acting, heh). As for ugly actors/actresses.. well, remember it’s an indy film :P

(Thanks tsl)

The Baby Name Wizard’s NameVoyager

Here’s a cool Java applet which shows you popularity of names from 1900 to 2003. Type in the name to see more specific graph for that name.

“Min” didn’t return anything :( Which reminds me.. someone at my old job used to call me “Max”.. Min/Max get it? I thought that was pretty clever.. ^^ Searching for “Max”, I see Maxim (hmm), Maximillian, Maxwell, and Maximus (yea!) Please call me Maximus from now on.. :D

MMOGChart.com

MMOGCHART.COM

Saw this site get mentioned in one of the tech talks on campus. The speaker stated, as you can see on this chart, Korean online game Lineage is THE most popular MMOG game ever produced. He claimed that something like 60% of the adult population of Korea subscribe to this game. Pretty pathetic…

The Emerging Mind

BBC - Radio 4 - Reith Lectures 2003 - The Emerging Mind

These are great series of lectures by Dr. V. Ramachandran (author of Phantom in the Brain) about his researches in cognitive science. Dr. Ramachandran is a master of explaining complex subjects in layman terms and he’s also very entertaining speaker. One of the methods many Cognitive Scientists use to study how brain works is by observing people with rare brain disorders. Some of the examples he presents in these lectures are just fascinating — including the famous “phantom limb” effect, and “synesthesia” where one literally hears colors, or has other mixed senses. He claims that 99% of the people have some form of synesthesia (and he gives an example of it!)
