My other toy arrives!

Nikon USA: 70-200mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor

I’ve been eyeing this lens for long time.. and I finally pulled the trigger ^^;;;

My first impressions:

  • Build quality is excellent (made in Japan, nice!)
  • It’s not as big as I had expected it to be (without the hood)
  • It’s heavier than I had expected it to be
  • VR works! (I shot some indoor pics at 1/3″ and I cannot see a shake)

I can’t wait to shoot some pics with it this weekend ^^

Boing Boing: New Palahniuk story GUTS makes people barf?

Apparently people have been passing out (or barfing) in many of Palahniuk’s book reading events. For those of who don’t know, Chuck Palahniuk wrote Fight Club — one of my favorite book which was made into a movie (also one of my favorite).

From the interview I heard, one of the bookstore is rumored to have a big blood stains on the carpet from someone fainting and cracking their head open (eek). Anyway, I listened to it last night (this link still works). And it’s definitely one of the grossest story I’ve ever heard… but also one of the funniest.

New toy arrives!

My new GPS arrived today! Compared to my old Garmin V, Quest has

  • much more compact body
  • much more memory (115MB compared to 19?)
  • a bright color screen
  • internal rechargeable battery
  • voice guidance
  • and better car-mount.

Route calculation seems to be bit faster as well. Of course you can’t compare it to factory GPS units, but if your car doesn’t already have a GPS it’s a really nice alternative for the fraction of the cost. Oh, and unlike factory GPS, you can use it for hiking and geocaching!

Moon Illusion

BBC NEWS | UK | Magazine | Why does the moon look so big now?

For the past few nights the moon has appeared larger than many people have seen it for almost 20 years. It is the world’s largest optical illusion, and one of its most enduring mysteries.

It can put a man in space, land a probe on Mars, but Nasa can’t explain why the moon appears bigger when it’s on the horizon than when it’s high in the night sky.

The mystery of the Moon Illusion, witnessed by millions of people this week, has puzzled great thinkers for centuries. There have even been books devoted to the matter.

Here’s a wikipedia entry.

Save PBS

PBS | Save PBS | Take Action

“The House Appropriations committee is proposing more than $220 million in funding cuts for public broadcasting, effectively a 46 percent reduction of public broadcasting’s federal financial support.”

Spend a few minutes and email/call your local representatives! Let your voice be heard. If you have been following the issue, you would know that this budget cut proposal is driven by the right-wing Republicans who thinks that PBS is too liberal for America.

Koreans and Golf

Korean Word for Golf? Chances Are, You’ll Hear It Here - New York Times

This nytimes article tries to explain Korean immigrants’ obsessions with golf. It could be that Korean immigrants are tyring to show off how “successful” they have become (toally).

Many Korean players at the range spend $6,000 on a set of clubs, but Mr. Na said he tells his students, ” ‘Don’t buy expensive clubs, because they might not even be right for you,’ and the next day they show up with them anyway,” he said.

Johnny Mun, 35, a Korean immigrant who lives in Flushing, said that most Koreans here take up golf “as a status thing, to show off.”

“They have the $4,000 clubs, the Burberry pants, the Prada shirt, just to show that ‘I’m successful, I’m rich,’ ” he said. Mr. Mun added that his wife, Hae, has a $3,000 set of irons and spent $5,000 on lessons last year. He bought her an $1,800 driver, he said, “but that’s when I was dating her, to impress her.”

and of course, someone tries to explain with 5000 years history of being squeezed in between powerful nations..

Ilhyun Jung, 50, a dentist from Forest Hills, put the Korean affinity for golf in historical perspective.

“For 5,000 years, Korea was surrounded by big countries and suffered a lot of invasions,” he explained. “We had to be strong and sustain many challenges, so we are used to challenge, and our persistence is naturally stronger. It is the nature of the Korean: We want to show our ability and do things perfectly.”

I think the fad is feeding off pretentious-nature of many Koreans, with recent string of good young golfers and parents who want their kids to grow up to become pro’s (it’s like winning a lottery for them!)

Ok, so what is Korean word for Golf? Kkol-phu? ^^

Drove down to Monterey with couple of friends over the weekend. I used to drive down every other weekend, but I haven’t been there for long time since my mom moved back to LA last year. Monterey is almost-perfect place to retire. It’s beautiful and is surrounded by ocean and mountains which makes it nice and cool through out the year.

Just saw this on 20/20Mexoryl, best available skin protection used around the world is not approved by FDA, hence is illegal in US. It is known to protect skin against UVA rays which causes skin wrinkles, in addition to UVB which causes skin cancer (which ordinary sunblock provides). It’s readily available online tho :)
