It’s time to stop killing meat and start growing it. By William Saletan
Is meat-eating necessary? It was, back when our ancestors had no idea where their next meal might come from. Meat kept us alive and made us stronger. Many scientists think it played a crucial role in the development of the human brain. Now it’s time to return the favor. Thousands of years ago, the human brain invented agriculture, and hunting lost its urgency. In the past two centuries, we’ve identified the nutrients in various kinds of meat, and we’ve learned how to get them instead from soy, nuts, and other vegetable sources. Meat has made us smart enough to figure out how we can live without it.
…
Researchers in Holland and the United States [have] grown and sautéed fish that smelled like dinner, though FDA rules didn’t allow them to taste it. Now they’re working on pork. The short-term goal is sausage, ground beef, and chicken nuggets. Steaks will be more difficult.
There’s an urban legend of how KFC make their fried chicken with headless, boneless chunk of meat protein that grows in test tubes. Sounds like that’s going to become reality soon. If it tastes and feels like meat, is it meat? Would you eat it? Not sure why, but it’s quite disturbing if you ask me… more disturbing than slaughtering animals for their meat.
WikiMapia = Wiki + Google maps
Wow, this is pretty excellent. It’s a Google Map Mashup with a wiki-twist.

The Judgment of Paris. By Mike Steinberger
France, no longer wine capital of the world? Great article about how France have lost their market dominance on wine to California and other countries.
France is currently sitting on an ocean of unsold wine, a glut that has led to a collapse in prices at the cheaper end of the spectrum. According to the New York Times, some 100 million liters of Appellation d’Origine Controlee wine was distilled into ethanol last year. That’s enough to fill 133 million bottles. Across France, hundreds of winemakers, and possibly thousands, are on the verge of bankruptcy; it has been suggested by some trade organizations that in the Languedoc, the hardest-hit region, 30 to 50 percent of wineries may ultimately be forced out of business.
…
shrewdly marketed brands like Australia’s Yellow Tail are winning over budget-minded drinkers around the world while a bloated, inefficient French wine industry grapples with millions of liters of unwanted wine and a growing army of destitute vintners.
Update: French wines are beat again in re-judgment :-)
Gaul is biting its tongue today after California smoked France Wednesday in a cross-continental tasting of wines that have matured in cellars for three decades. The California Cabernet Sauvignon-based wines placed first through fifth, followed by four wines from France’s hallowed Bordeaux region and then another California Cab.
Oh man, this is freakishly cool! It’s a gadget built into Nike running shoes that communicates with iPod Nano, which can update you on informations like your average speed, distance covered, distance remaining, etc.. and at the end of your workout, you can sync with your PC to track workout progress. @@ Now, only if they had bicycle computer integration… (although I recently found out in my traffic school, having two earbuds while driving/cycling is illegal)

LOL, so true… :D
HOWTO: Save at the Pump - Consumerist
- Gas prices changes as much by 20% within blocks, check around for cheaper prices.
- Don’t top off your tank—overfilling is bad for the environment and you may pay for gas that won’t make it into your tank.
- When the pump automatically shuts off, turn the handle upside down 180 degree to release the small amount left from the pump to make sure you get all the gas you’re paying for.
- Shop for gas during coolest time of the day, when gas is at its densest, so you get more for your money.
Another reason for #2 is that it does not add extra weight to your car. Sure you end up going to the pump more often, but maybe that will dissuade you from driving too much :-)

The Lake House - Movie Info - Yahoo! Movies
I was watching TV ad for this movie, and it suddenly occured to me… whoa, this is a remake of a Korean movie Il Mare (시월애)! I hope the Speed-duo don’t screw up the great story.
I also heard the remake of The Old Boy is in the works. Nice~
Koreans’ Kimchi Adulation, With a Side of Skepticism - Los Angeles Times
“We found that if you were a very, very heavy eater of kimchi, you had a 50% higher risk of getting stomach cancer,” said Kim Heon of the department of preventive medicine at Chungbuk National University and one of the authors. “It is not that kimchi is not a healthy food — it is a healthy food, but in excessive quantities there are risk factors.”
Oh man, I used to be a very heavy kimchi eater when I was younger. I love kimchi boiled, sauteed, fresh, fermented… with rice, ramen, even pizza… I like all kinds of kimchi, especially the very strong tasting, salty and spicy kinds that is the specialty of the region where I (and my mom) come from. This is sad news if true :-(

The precious, little eggling looks and feels like an extra large egg, but crack its top and discover a garden ready to grow! Cultivation is easy — seeds are already sown into eggling’s fortified peat mixture, just crack it’s top (by tapping on it with a spoon), water and place in bright spot. Plants grow for up to five months in the eggling, after which it can be planted directly in soil.
Haha, these are so cute! They beat Chia-pets hands down :D

This is just what I have been looking for! It’s a free website that lets you keep track of the wines you’ve tasted, own, or plan to purchase. Check out my “cellar” hehe. Sign up so we can be “Drinking Buddies”~ :D
The site looks like it’s been built with Ruby on Rails, so it’s very Web 2.0′ish, with AJAX’ified text fields, etc…
