The Evolution of Brunch.

The Evolution of Brunch. By Bryan Curtis - Slate Magazine

there’s an argument that [Sunday Brunch] owes a great deal to American Jewry. Brunch, Gary Greengrass acknowledges, was a kind of Jewish alternative to church. Jewish families, with nothing much to do on Sunday mornings, would take a long, leisurely meal, with traditional foods like bagels, lox, and blintzes.

The other thing about Sunday brunch is that it tends to be generational. In your 20s—mandatory, often twice a weekend. In your 30s and 40s—less so, unless you want to lug around a stroller. Fifties and beyond—again frequent, though starting at an earlier hour. It might as well be breakfast.

Heh, didn’t realize I live so close to the birth place of Brunch! I even walked by Barney Greengrass on the way to Saigon Grill — it looked very fishy. I think we shall go check out Sarabeth this weekend~ :-)

16 Waiting to exhale: In 1907 a Massachusetts doctor conducted an experiment with a specially designed deathbed and reported that the human body lost 21 grams upon dying. This has been widely held as fact ever since. It’s not.

I previously blogged about the excellent book about Death: Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers

Flickr Photo Compass 0.8 - 6V8 - Production of my Mind

Wow, Flickr Map was released yesterday, and today someone wrote this neat Greasemonkey script which inserts photo-compass in Flickr UI which shows you photos that were taken near-by the currently browsing photo. Very neat!

Flickr introduces Geotagging

Today, Flickr launched geotagging — basically ability to “pin-up” your photos to the world map. The idea is not new, and has been implemented by third party to some degree, but this one is VERY nicely integrated with Y! Maps Beta and existing Flickr UI.

Examples (click on the Satellite/Hybrid on top-right corner for more coolness):

Yahoo! Hack Day is Coming!

For all you nerds and geeks out there, the first external Yahoo! Hack Day is Coming, Sept 29-30. (Hm, the website looks so Jamie Zawinski’sh, who probably also copied the color combo from the Matrix :-)

Korean Guitar Virtuoso

“funtwo”, an anonymous guitar virtuoso in this video and a huge YouTube celebrity (#1 in Most Fav’ed, Most Viewed, and Most Discussed Music video of all time), now his identity is finally revealed. It’s shocking that he’s only been playing guitar for 6 years!

I was able to trace funtwo’s video to Jeong-Hyun Lim, a 23-year-old Korean who taught himself guitar over the course of the last six years. Now living in Seoul, he listens avidly to Bach and Vivaldi, and in 2000 he took a month of guitar lessons. He plays an ESP, an Alfee Custon SEC-28OTC with gold-colored detailing.

Update: He even makes Yahoo! 9 today!
