Teumsae Ramen

ramen.jpg

Teumsae (틈새라면) is my new favorite instant ramen. I like it so much that I thought I should blog about it :-P The guy pictured in the packaging is the chef at famous chain of ramen restaurants in Korea (and also in LA), and I guess this instant ramen is supposed to replicate the flavor.

Now, most of my friends know that I LOVE spicy food, as seen here (see #34 ^^) But this ramen tips the spicy scale for me when it comes to ramen, and whenever I eat it, I probably lose weight from sweating so much! I recommend against using the whole soup base — 3/4 should be plenty spicy for most people. It should be perfect in coming days when the weather gets cold~

SF vs NYC

GeoIQ/Google Maps/Yahoo Mashup : SF vs NYC

Wow, this is a pretty cool mashup — it takes a while to load so be patient. It would be nice if they provided a legend for the heat color though.

Jimmy Carter on Larry King Live, Live!

As part of Winter’s Eve at Lincoln Square celebration, we had a chance to tour Inside CNN for free last night (normally $15, rip-off). And as the tour was about to end, we walked by a live taping of Larry King Live and lo-and-behold sitting at the table was none other than the former president Jimmy Carter! We were so wide-eye star-struck; he was the best part of the tour! :-) Unfortunately, Larry was in Los Angeles studio, but we saw his signature tie and suspenders on glass display.

Worldwide Ages of Consent

A table of worldwide ages of consent, including US states

Interesting. Can’t believe S. Korea has one of the lowest age. I immigrated to U.S. when I was 13! (interpret that however you like -,-)

Age of Skyscrapers

Wired 14.12: START

The world’s cities are getting taller – and fast. Between 2001 and 2012, almost as many skyscrapers will be constructed as were built in the entire 20th century.

Here’s a cool graph that shows top phallic symbols of present and future -,-;; Hm.. does anyone else think Lotte World II Hotel looks lot like Eifel Tower?

What’s the difference between photos taken with and without Flash? A picture is worth.. you know.

Use Your Imagination

YouTube - Child Genius

Here’s a really cool video I saw few years ago. It’s an ad by Japanese Ad Council to encourage people to support Children’s Foundation. It’s one of the most ingenuous ad I’ve ever seen. I tried to search for it again but couldn’t find it, until today, I chanced upon it.

Citibank WTF moment

I was lured into applying for a new Citi card few weeks ago.. then I get a phone call this morning saying that they need to verify my address back in 1994?! 12 freakin’ years ago? Besides, I was in college back then — dang, I was in college 12 years ago :-( that’s depressing — and I moved around a lot, just like everyone else. Who remembers this kinds of information, especially at 10 in the morning? Hope it wasn’t some phishing attempt.. hmm..

Thanks Rex!

Dean’s Run Home

Dean’s Run Home
Dean Karnazes who recently completed his Endurance 50 with NYC Marathon, is running back home to San Francisco. Run, Forest, run! (sorry, couldn’t help) Check out his progress on map

Today is the most liberating, terrifying, exciting, and confusing day of my life. I am walking out of a hotel room in New York City, and running west. Why west? Because that is the direction of my house in San Francisco. Yes, I am running home from the New York City Marathon, the final marathon of the Endurance 50, across the country back to my house. What is my plan? I really don’t have one. There is no script here. It will be kind of like reality TV, only this is not TV. I’m not sure of the route I’ll follow, I’m not sure where I’ll stay, I’m not sure how long it will take. All I know is that my heart is telling me this is the right thing to do.

Gladwell vs Schwartz, on Happiness

Here are two excellent talks from TED Both, very engaging and entertaining.

First is Malcolm Gladwell, best selling author of Blink and The Tipping Point and one of my favorite authors. He talks about Howard Moskowitz who revolutionized the food industry by offering more types of everything that caters to unique tastes of individuals - i.e. make perfect spaghetti sauces, not a perfect spaghetti sauce. Mokowitz is the man behind 30-some different kinds of Spaghetti sauces, half-dozen Pepsi flavors, etc. Gladwell concludes by saying that

In embracing the diversity of human beings, we will find the sure way to true happiness

However, I couldn’t help but notice that this idea seems to conflict with the idea of another excellent TED speaker, Barry Schwartz - author of The Paradox of Choice: Why More Is Less. He basically claims that too much choice makes us miserable.

Adding options to people’s lives can’t help but to increase the expectations people have about how good those options will be, and that’s going to produce less satisfactions with results even when their good results.

The secret to happiness is: low expectations.

This is antithesis of Moskowitz’ism.

Both are very convincing. Who is right?
Is more, or less, better for greater happiness in life?
