Charles Shaw 2006 Merlot

2-buck-chuck from TJ’s.

Clear burgundy, almost-cranberry-juice-like in color, and almost as fruity in taste.

36 Hours in Berkeley, Calif.

strada36 Hours in Berkeley, Calif. - New York Times

NYTimes profiles Berkeley, CA in “36 Hours” feature of it’s Travel section. I’ve lived 5+ years in Berkeley, and 10+ years in the Bay Area, but it’s sad to think that I have not done most of the things that were listed there — I have not even been to the famed Berkeley Bowl! But now that we go to Berkeley on many weekends, I’ll start to check out some of these places.

There are few that I would add to the list, however.

  1. Cheeseboard Collective and Zachary’s Pizza : Berkeley is the pizza mecca of the West Coast. And sure, Fat Slice and Blondie’s are okay when you’re a hungry student, but these two gourmet pizza rule! I still think Zachary’s Pizza trumps any Chicago pizza from Chicago!
  2. Gourmet Ghetto : Sure, Fourth Street is hip, but you can’t beat Gourmet Ghetto in terms of quality. One of the best eateries in the Bay Area are concentrated in just a few blocks area. Cheeseboard (see above), Chez Panisse, gourmet take-outs in Gregoire and Epicurious Garden, just to name a few.
  3. Scharffen Berger Chocolate Factory Tour for chocolate lovers.
  4. North Face Outlet for hikers and wannabe-hikers.
  5. Ryno’s : Heh, just plugging for my friend Kenny’s business. Free frozen yogurts can go long way, Kenny! ;-)

Tata Motors Buys Jaguar and Land Rover

Tata Motors says Ford deal to improve balance sheet - Yahoo! News

[Indian] Tata announced the deal to buy Jaguar and Land Rover, which will give it a line-up ranging from the world’s cheapest car to some of its more expensive, on Wednesday.

I think the significance of this deal is being overlooked — that India was Britain’s colony until less than hundred years ago. At least symbolically, this deal must be triumph for India as a nation. It’s like Samsung buying Sony. Globalization has truly flattened the playing field of the world’s economy. In fact, tables are being turned on the superpowers states of yesteryears. It’s only matter of time, until US corporations ultimately face the same fate.

Earth Hour US - Earth Hour 2008

Show your love for the Mother Earth by switching off the light 8-9pm on 3/29 (Saturday). Should be a good before & after photo op for San Francisco night skyline from the Treasure Island.

Bush’s War

Bush’s War | PBS

I had this on my calendar but regret that I was not able to catch it on TV. I’m so glad that PBS has made it available for view online. I think it’s absolute necessity that every concerned citizens of the US watch this show!

Barrio La Boca

Merlot, 2007
Mendoza, Argetina

(cork’d review)

I decided to record what we drink from now on. This is just for my benefit to remember what I have had… an any impressions I got, if any. I’m not sophisticated enough to write any colorful, nuanced reviews of wines :-)

Village of La Boca looks so beautiful — like crayon drawings of yesteryears.

Re-Growing Organs

Medicine’s Cutting Edge: Re-Growing Organs, The Future Is Here: Regenerative Powder, Ink Jet Heart Cells And Custom-Made Body Parts - CBS News

Three years ago, Lee Spievack sliced off the tip of his finger in the propeller of a hobby shop airplane.

What happened next, Andrews reports, propelled him into the future of medicine. Spievack’s brother, Alan, a medical research scientist, sent him a special powder and told him to sprinkle it on the wound.

Amazing… what’s more amazing is that the powder is made of not-so-high-tech material at all. And I wonder what is the limit to its ability — can it help re-grow a hand, an arm, a leg, a head? No, that would be freaky…

North Face Sample Sale

North FaceIf you live in the Bay Area, be sure to check out annual North Face Sample Sale at the North Face outlet in Berkeley. Somehow we ended going there both Saturday and Sunday (ya, we felt like losers for standing in line for 3 hours on Saturday just to get into the store -,- ), but I must admit the savings are worth a little bit of patience.

It’s not for the faint of heart, though. Inside the store is a total apocalyptic mayhem — people climbing on top of other people, parents abandoning their children, clothes and bags flying everywhere… But it’s also fun and unique experience. I’ve never seen such a crowd of bargain hungry consumers since I moved here from Korea!

All down-filled and/or Goretex outer-wears are $50 or $80, sleeping bags $100, bags $30 or $50, and all shoes are $15. We managed to find a $345 hiking backpack for $15! Not sure if we’ll ever use it in the wild, but you never know, right? LOL

The sale goes on until all items are sold - I overheard for about a week. It’s open 9am-7pm this Monday, Tues, Wed and go back regular hours 10am-7pm from Thurs. Cash out your economic stimulus package checks and check it out yo! :D

Humans Crawling With Microbes?!

Infoporn: Humans Crawling With Microbes?! That’s Not All Bad.

Check out this excellent info-graph about microbes in human body.

It is said that 90% (!) of all cells in human body are microbes. That’s right, you are not what you eat, but you are (mostly) microbes and what they excrete.

Peace!

Did you all know where the Peace sign comes from?

World’s best-known protest symbol turns 50

Peace out!
