Friday Night in Jack London Square

– Friday –

07:30PM - Migi and I leave home for dinner at Kenny’s

08:30PM - I get a call from my real estate agent Dave, who live just few blocks away from our apartment. He was worried that I wasn’t answering my phone and informs me that Oakland Police Department has blocked off 4 block radius around our apartment and began evacuating people out of the building because of a hostage situation!! A major WTF??

09:00PM - Our apartment shows up all over the breaking news on TV - yay(?) Apparently a gunman has locked himself inside one of the units in our building and supposedly shot at police officers. A negotiator and SWAT team is called.

10:30PM - Still no sign of progress on the negotiation. We leave Kenny’s, hoping it would end soon… (without any casualties, hopefully)

10:45PM - We park our car outside the police barricade and walk around the surroundings. Still no sign of any progress. And people are shivering outside. We come back to the car and doze off.

– Saturday –

12:30AM - I go back to check if there are any progress. A kind police officer tells me that they sent all the people to a makeshift Red Cross Disaster Relief shelter. We join about a dozen of our neighbors who are watching a police drama on a small TV.

01:30AM - Red Cross staff and Oakland Police move us to the gym at nearby elementary school where they had set up cots. I felt like a Katrina victim at this point :-( I try to go to sleep, but can’t. One thing I learned is that you have to pad the cot with a blanket or it’s going to be very cold. And my eyes with contacts are drying out of their sockets. But I try to sleep anyway…

04:00AM - An officer wakes us up and tells us that it’s over — the gunman finally surrenders! Thank gawd it ended without any fatalities.

04:30AM - We drive home, and still find SWAT team on our floor and on the roof, shining flash lights on the 5th floor units. I see a woman wheeled out on a stretcher and 2 kids. They must’ve been the hostages… Poor kids.

04:45AM
- Home sweet home!

Man Surrenders, Ending All Night Hostage Standoff

I do not believe this event is an indication of Oakland being a dangerous city. It probably was a domestic dispute gone bad, an isolated incident that could happen anywhere. Too bad it happened in a city that’s already getting a bad rap for being one of the more dangerous urban cities (maybe things will change in the future)

Thanks to David who called us to make sure we’re ok! (None of our friends/family called… I’d like to believe that either our friends don’t watch TV news or they don’t know where we live -_-) And kudos to the very kind staffs of Red Cross and Oakland Police Department! Oh, and thanks to Kenny and Nanyoung for delicious dinner and their psychic ability to get us out of the harms way :D

Ji Lee

Wired Magazine profiles Korean-Brazillian-American artist, Ji Lee

Looking through some of his works at his personal site, I couldn’t help but think “Wow! That’s why he’s an artist and I am not”

Some of my favorites: Nine Circles Numbers, Redundant Clock, (his own) Wedding Invitation

Chicken-like meat product

Growing meat without growing animals.

Ack. The famous urban legend might actually come true!

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has just offered a $1 million prize to anyone who develops a commercially viable “in vitro chicken-meat product.” The catch is that the product can’t contain or entail the use of “animal-derived products, except for starter cells obtained in the initial development stages.”

Sorry, I will still not eat chicken :P

Light and comfortable with good support

4out of 5

Sizing: Feels true to size

Width: Feels true to width

Pros: Good Padding, Comfortable

Best Uses: Pavement, Trails

Describe Yourself: Gym Rat

Great deal for the price. It’s light, yet it gives you great support. Only minus is that I found laces were too short for loop-lace lock.

Barefoot Walking

TenYou walk wrong.

It took 4 million years of evolution to perfect the human foot. But we’re wrecking it with every step we take.

So claims this NY Magazine article. It’s everything you ever wanted to know about walking in barefoot. And at the end, it somehow feels like a subliminal ad for Vivo Barefoots and MBT because you know, lot of people (me included) will go out and buy a barefoot technology shoes just to see if it really lives up to the hype. Maybe I’ll start with Nike Free .

Up and Then Down

Our Local Correspondents: Up and Then Down: Reporting & Essays: The New Yorker

An excellent article (kind of longish) about everything most people ever wanted to know about elevators, centered around a story about a guy who was stuck in one for 41 hours. Be sure to check out the (time compressed) surveillance video of his ordeal — in case you’re curious to see how he took care of #1 and #2, those are not shown :D

What would you do if you were stuck in an elevator for 41 hours? No doubt it’s going to be very traumatic for most people — it’s like spending 2 whole days in a solitary confinement. And what would you do, and how would you feel after you got out? Read the article to find what happened to the guy, after this potentially life changing event.
