Cellphones Kills?

Mobile phones ‘more dangerous than smoking’ - Health News, Health & Wellbeing - The Independent

Mobile phones could kill far more people than smoking or asbestos, a study by an award-winning cancer expert has concluded. He says people should avoid using them wherever possible and that governments and the mobile phone industry must take “immediate steps” to reduce exposure to their radiation.

A personal friend of ours just got diagnosed for brain tumor, so this issue hits us pretty close to home. Considering her young age, I wonder if her high cellphone usage played any significant role in that…

It’s not even certain whether using wired headset will increase or decrease the EMF radiation. There are claims that using wired headsets will actually increase the radiation to your head, but not so much for bluetooth headsets. WTF?! That’s counter-intuitive to me. Bluetooth, being a wireless device, you would think will emit more radiation.

And there’s this study that cellphone usage might lower sperm count… :-/

With industry backed “scientific studies” and government pressured by various lobbyist groups, it’s becoming more and more difficult for us consumers to make the right decisions that affects our lives.

Save NYTimes article to del.icio.us

NYTimes Save to Delicious – Userscripts.org

Minor update to “Save to del.icio.us” greasemonkey script. NYTimes removed del.icio.us link in article share tool after Y! Buzz came out. That might generate more traffic to the article, but it sucks for the users because Y! Buzz was never meant to be a social bookmarking tool, but more of a digg wanna-be. Besides, is anyone using Y! Buzz?? Half the time I try to buzz an article, it says the article is not found, or something like that…

Anyway, good thing this greasemonkey script still works.

Essential Firefox 3 Extensions

Firefox Add-ons

If you have not yet upgraded to Firefox 3, you are missing out on the most significant upgrade to Firefox made ever, IMO. It won over even the pickiest Firefox 2 users I know (ahem, you know who are). If you have upgraded, here are some of the extensions you might want to check out:

Inline PDF in Firefox

firefox-mac-pdf - Google Code

This is a must-have extension for those who are using Firefox 3 and Mac OS 10.4 or higher.

On a related note, you can make Firefox 3 automatically delete all temporary files it downloaded to the Desktop (such as inline PDFs if you are not using above mentioned extension) by setting browser.helperApps.deleteTempFileOnExit configuration variable to “true” in about:config page. It also works for Thunderbird 2

origami with DaVinci robot

(that paper crane is smaller than a penny) This is the state of tele-surgery… Absolutely amazing.

When I was in college, one of the professors of Computer Science was researching tele-surgery. I remember thinking “Wow, that sounds scary” and never thought that it would be anything close to being practical.

Exfoliating Scrubs to Avoid

Exfoliating plastic beads feel good—unless you live in the ocean. - By Hillary Rosner - Slate Magazine

the exfoliating ingredient in Olay’s body wash, and in most similar big-brand products (such as Dove Gentle Exfoliating Foaming Facial Cleanser and Clean & Clear Daily Pore Cleanser), is actually made out of plastic: tiny particles of polyethylene that scrub the dirt from your face and then wash straight down the drain and into watersheds and, eventually, oceans.

Please stay away from using these products. The article mentions more environmentally friendly alternatives that are made with salt, pumice, peach stones or apricot kernels. They are probably better for your body as well. Which types of microbeads would you rather have stuck in your eyes while you wash your face?

Attack of Killer Shower Curtains

That ‘new shower curtain smell’ gives off toxic chemicals, study finds - Los Angeles Times

Vinyl shower curtains sold at major retailers across the country emit toxic chemicals that have been linked to serious health problems, according to a report released Thursday by a national environmental organization.

Isn’t there anything left in the world that isn’t toxic? Where do you buy organic shower curtains?

BMW GINA Light Visionary Model

This is quite amazing case of thinking outside the box. “The GINA philosophy in a short form, is about being flexible - thinking flexible, acting flexible, context over dogma”

Candle light protests in Korea

Protests in South Korea Imperil Government - NYTimes.com

Finally, Korean candle light protests makes it to the frontpage of NYTimes. It started out as a protest against importing of cows older than 30 months that are more prone to be infected by mad cow disease. Now, they are calling out for resignation of the President.

I do not know the full story behind this, but it anything, it shows the fickleness of Korean society. Sure the administration bowed to US to reach unfavorable trade deal. However, I believe it’s wrong to demand resignation of the leader just because of a few failed policies. It’s not as if he lied to the nation into going into a pointless war. There are much more effective methods to bring changes to a fail policy, such as boycotting or community educations.

There were things about the former President Roh people hated. And even then, people cried fowl calling out for resignation of Roh. No matter how good the leader is in any organization, there sure to be some group of people who are never satisfied or feel injusticed - that’s just the nature of democracy. Lee Myung-bak was elected President with the biggest margin in history just little over 100 days ago. And he was elected despite the fact that he was linked to several scandals. Maybe it’s time for the people in Korea to be more responsible for the choices they have made.
