Going to the End of the Line

http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2008/08/22/nyregion/20080822_LASTSTOP_FEATURE.html

Here’s a great slide show that shows what neighborhood around the end of subway lines look like.

I guess for lot of Manhattanites, who think NYC is the center of the world, these must be pretty foreign to them :)

Thunderbird Tip: Don’t Trash, just Mark It As Deleted

For the Thunderbird and IMAP users out there… I found that deleting messages in Thunderbird over IMAP can be very slow, because by default, it copies the message to the Trash folder. One way to speed this up is to just mark a message as deleted and expunge it when you exit Thunderbird.

  1. Go to Tools | Account Settings
  2. Choose “Server Settings”
  3. In “When I delete a message” item, choose “Mark it as deleted”
  4. Optionally, check “Clean up (”Expunge”) Inbox on Exit” item

I think the future version of Thunderbird allows Smart Folders so you can have a “view” of only deleted messages, but I rarely miss my deleted messages anyway (I lost all my email archive from 2004-2007 few months ago, but I’m still alive… ^^)

What’s My Age Again?

Science No Help in Olympic Gymnastics Age Controversy | Wired Science from Wired.com

Pinning down someone’s exact chronological age from biological markers is impossible, say scientists, so tell your vain grandfather he can keep paying full-price at the movie theater as long as he wants.

“People age at different rates. I can’t even think of any possible way to [determine chronological age],” said Stuart Kim, a developmental biologist at Stanford University and expert in the biological signs of human aging. “There’s just no way around it.”

This article pretty much sums up exactly what I’ve wonder about after reading news about the Chinese gymnast. I was told that one can estimate the physical age of a person by pinching the skin above the knuckle for 10-seconds, release, and count how many seconds it takes for it to go back to the normal look and multiply that by 10 ^^; But that’s probably not precise enough to be able to tell between 14 and 16 year old’s. Maybe IOC can require more documentations such as school records, or even a global registrar of all potential gymnasts. None of the methods are foolproof, but probably more difficult to forge than just the passport.

Di Fara Pizzeria

37signals blog, a technology blog, writes about Domenico DeMarco and Di Fara pizzeria, possible the best pizza in the nation.

DeMarco doesn’t care about experts, franchising, or expansion because he doesn’t have to. That’s what you can do when you run your own small business. You can stay small. You can create your own thing and keep it the way you want it. You can take pride in what you’re creating and oversee everything that comes out of your oven. If people don’t like the wait, they can go somewhere else. If they don’t want to pay extra for the ingredients you grow yourself or import from Italy, that’s fine. You can be a perfectionist and take as long as you want. And the customers that care about what you care about will flock to you.

Oh, how I miss DiFara…

Unfair Home Court Advantage

OK, I don’t want to sound like a sore loser, but I do have to vent this time.

I was watching the highlights of women’s individual archery. This is an event which Koreans dominated for years. But today, when Korean archer was about to shoot, Chinese crowd hissed, blew whistles, clapped suddenly, and waived giant red flag to upset archer’s peripheral vision, and the official did almost nothing to stop it. This is a common practice in soccer or basketball, but in archery?? A major WTF! I am sure the Chinese archer was just as good and may deserve a medal. However, Chinese crowd at the stadium must come out of their narrow focus of achieving national pride by any means necessary, and must realize that their behavior smudges the image of their beloved country through International eyes.
